A quantum education centre in Iași, built together with IBM
Romania's first campus dedicated to quantum technology takes shape in Iași, with access to IBM quantum systems and resources over the cloud.
Quantum technology is moving from the laboratory towards the problems that matter — simulations in medical research, cryptography, algorithms that classical machines struggle with. Romania joins that movement with a project that puts Iași on the map: FreeYa Mind Campus, the country's first educational campus dedicated to quantum technology, developed in partnership with IBM.
A partnership signed with the universities of Iași
The project was launched on 17 December 2024 at the Palace of Culture, where the campus signed a strategic partnership with the major local institutions: "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University, "Grigore T. Popa" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University, the University of Life Sciences, "George Enescu" National University of Arts, and the Iași County School Inspectorate. The Mayor of Iași and the President of the County Council attended, confirming the support of the local authorities for the academic and scientific community growing around the project.
Three dimensions
Education. Courses and workshops on quantum technology, open to students, pupils and professionals from different fields.
Research. Advanced research centres in quantum computing, physics and engineering, supported by a high-performance data centre that provides computing resources and security for quantum and AI work.
Entrepreneurship. An ecosystem for the startups and companies that turn quantum technology into products.
Where the research goes
The work concentrates on a few strategic directions: technologies for financial services, with an emphasis on cybersecurity and risk analysis; optimization of algorithms used in computational fluid dynamics; innovations in drug delivery systems; and nanotechnologies for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.
Alongside courses, scholarships and research programmes, the campus supports the local academic community through career and innovation opportunities — with the ambition of turning Iași into a European reference point for these technologies. The official launch took place on 5 and 6 March 2025, with case studies and broad institutional support.
